Cosmopolitanism and Trauma Theory in Post-Theoretical Context: An Interview with Vladimir Biti
后理论语境下的世界主义与创伤理论:弗拉基米尔·比蒂访谈录
Vladimit Biti is Distinguished Professor at University of Vienna, member of Academia Europaea, and editor of Arcadia: International Journal of Literary Culture. He published over a hundred articles and nine books including the most recent Tracing Global Democracy Literature, Theory, and the Politics of Trauma(2016) and Attached to Dispossession: Sacrificial Narratives in Post-imperial Europe(2018), Biti engaged in a number of research areas such as cosmopolitanism, trauma theory, culture criticism, and narrative theory. On behalf of Foreign Literature Studies, Dr. Wan Xiaomeng interviewed Biti on a wide range of issues during his visit to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in June 2018. When addressing the complexity of cosmopolitanism, Biti claims that different geopolitical, social, and cultural circumstances develop different and often hybrid forms of cosmopolitanism, and thus it is so multi-faceted and heterogeneous phenomenon. Apart from commenting on the recent developments in trauma theory, narrative theory and ethical criticism, he also elaborates on such concepts as “sacrificial narrative” and “pedagogical relationship.” In addition, Biti offers suggestions for Chinese young scholars and expresses his hope for Chinese-European cooperation in the future.
弗拉基米尔·比蒂是奥地利维也纳大学讲席教授,欧洲科学院院士 ,《阿卡迪亚:国际文学文化学刊》主编,主要从事从事世界主义、创伤理论、文化批评、叙事理论等领域的研究,发表论文百余篇,出版专著 9 部,其近期作品主要包括《探寻全球民主:文学、理论和创伤政治》(2016)、《依附豪夺:后帝国欧洲的献祭叙事》(2018)。2018 年 6 月,受《外国文学研究》编辑部委托,万晓蒙博士在比蒂访问上海交通大学期间,就世界文学、创伤理论等前沿话题对其进行了专访。访谈中,比蒂主要论述了世界主义理论的复杂性,指出不同的地理、社会、文化环境催生不同形式的世界主义,而世界主义由此经常以混杂的形式出现,表现出多面性、异质性的特征。比蒂不仅评述了创伤理论、叙事理论、伦理批评的最新发展,同时又结合其近期研究成果,详细阐述了“献祭叙事”、“教学关系”等概念。针对未来的文学和文化研究,他给中国青年学者提出了相关建议,也期待中欧未来展开合作。

The Cultivation of the Mind and the Course of Civilization: An Aspect of English Literature
从 16 世纪至今的英国文学作品中,我们可以不断地发现对心智培育的关注,以及借此回应文明进程的努力。这种努力逐步拓展了文化观念的内涵。针对以“分裂” 为特征的文明,主张疗治分裂的心智,恢复完整的人性,从而促进人类社会的全面/均衡发展,这是数代英国文人的心声。培育心智的方法多种多样,那么最关键的方法是什么呢?对于这一问题,古今英国文学作品都有解答,虽然五花八门,但是如果仔细探寻,就会发现往往殊途同归——都会把想象力看作心智培育的关键。
A constant concern with the cultivation of the mind, in response to the course of civilization, can be found in English literary works ever since the 16th century. The efforts concerned have gradually extended the intensions of the idea of culture. It is the common aspirations of literati in Britain, in their efforts to counteract the “fragmentation” which characterizes the Western civilization, to seek for the regimen of the mind and the restoration of a wholesome human nature, so as to facilitate an all-round or balanced development of the human society. Which method, of all the approaches available, is most crucial to the cultivation of the mind? Multifarious answers seem to have been provided in English literature, in ancient times or today, but they all tend to focus on imagination as the crux of the matter.

The focus of The Ambassadors is on the natural affinity, as well as inevitable conflict, between the aesthetic and moral impulses within human nature. By transcending such conventional dichotomies as modernity vs. tradition, aesthetics vs. morality and, finally, America vs. Europe, James, in The Ambassadors, has projected his vision of an ideal form of cultural and social life in response to his profound diagnosis of the crisis of Man in the Age of Modernity. Against the background in which Edwardian Britain witnesses the decline of religion and the assertiveness of various forms of individual subjectivity, James’s moral and ethical ideas made him a prominent member of the intellectuals of his time who sought to forge a new conscience for their countries and societies.

文学之力出自对人类心智与记忆的培养。词源上看,心智与记忆实为同一,而心智本性脆弱,完善的道德心智需多渠道才智历练。在中世纪,心智培养强调融入群体生活对于性格培养的重要意义,以及研读文学形成高尚的生活准则。到了约翰洛克时代,心智的内涵扩展到理解力、理性以及才智三个方面。至此心智培育既成为文化的基本内涵,又是文化的重要旨归。在英国文化观念流变史的各个阶段,心智培养概念有不同侧重,早期强调积累个人处世智慧,后来转换到寻找知识智慧,贯穿其中的强烈文化冲动是追求心灵智慧的达成,是对国家和人类文明前景的深刻关怀。处世智慧、知识智慧和心灵智慧恰如三足鼎立,它们的全面发展构成英国历史上心智培育的完整要义。
The power of literature lies in the cultivation of the mind and memory. Etymologically, the word mind is derived from gemynd(memory), which implies that mind is weak and feeble in nature. The cultivation of the moral power of the mind entails various means of intellectual training. In the Middle Ages, a great emphasis is laid on the significance of community life in the formation of character, and on the study of literature in the observation of the conduct. In the era of John Locke, the connotations of mind are extended including the faculties of apprehension and reason, or intellect. The implication of cultivation of the mind is shifted to the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom for the nourishment of the mind. That's how the cultivation of the mind becomes the basic connotation and the ultimate aim of culture. During the different stages of British society, the implication of the cultivation of mind varies. The emphasis on the worldly wisdom at the early stage is shifted to the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom in later period. Nevertheless, the combination of worldly wisdom, knowledge and spiritual wisdom makes up the whole meaning of the cultivation of mind.

Poetic Truth as the Expression of Anxiety in the 19th-Century English Literature
“诗性真理”是 18 世纪末 19 世纪初英国现代转型时期出现的重要观念, 它与科学真理相对,是对启蒙理性主义的一种反拨,也是转型焦虑在文学领域的表征。英国浪漫主义诗人传承以休谟为代表的启蒙情感主义传统,坚持人类共同本性和认识的整体性特征,倡导想象力和共情能力;以穆勒和阿诺德为代表的维多利亚批评家试图通过情感培育弥补理性教育的不足,通过精英文化对抗通俗文化与失序问题,倡导诗性真理和完善的心智培育,以化解由社会转型带来的精神危机。
Poetic truth as a concept emerges in England in its transition into the modern world at the turn of the 19th century. In opposition to scientific truth together with rationality, poetic truth gives expression to the anxiety of the intelligentsia towards the transition of society. The English Romantic poets, in inheritance of Humean Sentimentalism, emphasize imagination and fellow feelings on the premise of holism and common humanity. In the vein of Romanticism Victorian critics shift the focus on the epistemological value of poetry. While John Stuart Mill seeks to balance intellectual education with the cultivation of emotion, Matthew Arnold sticks to the elite culture against popular culture and social anarchy. Both scholars aim to cope with the cultural crisis by advocating poetic truth and the comprehensive cultivation of human mind.

The Forging of National Conscience in Language and Culture: On Thackeray’s The Vanity Fair
“民族良心”作为文化命题,是构建民族特性、文化身份和行为准则的过程。本文聚焦《名利场》中女主人公利蓓加夏泼扔弃《英语大辞典》这一举动,指出萨克雷将约翰逊博士的词典看作民族知识、文化乃至道德象征,深刻意识到英语起着对内凝聚民族向心力,对外与其他民族相区隔的重要作用。他在小说中着力描述了英国人对民族语言和文化缺乏自信的现实,揭示出英国公共媒介浮夸虚伪、良心丧失的斑斑劣迹,旨在警醒并敦促国民,尤其是掌握文字的人,应努力铸造有良心的语言文字,探寻同质认同,守卫民族文化。《名利场》的创作本身就是萨克雷追寻有良心的文化之举,反映了维多利亚早期渐入英国国民意识的民族良心,形成了与英国文化观念的互动。
National conscience, as a cultural proposition, is a cognitive process that elicits the common code of conduct based on national and cultural identity. With a focus on The Vanity Fair, the essay discusses Rebecca Sharp’s act of discarding Dr. Johnson’s dictionary. Reading A Dictionary of the English Language as a symbol of national knowledge, culture and even morality, the paper argues for the function of English language in building up the national consciousness of Britain distinct from other nations. In Thackeray’s description, British people is unconfident of national language and culture and the public media is featured with hypocrisy and the loss of conscience. In his novel, Thackeray intends to urge his fellow countrymen to adopt a homogenous language and culture with national conscience.

Poetry in the Anthropocene: A Case Study of Philip Larkin’s “To the Sea”
艺术审美是应对人类纪诸多问题必不可少的手段;诗歌作为一种主要的艺术形式,必然对此有着深刻和超前的表达。拉金后期代表作《去海边》创作于温室效应日渐明显的背景之下,它表达了作者对变异的气候环境的感知,以及基于这种感知的对传统与存在的忧虑。以该作品为代表的拉金诗歌描绘了 20 世纪六十年代英格兰雾霭弥漫、气温异常和植物疯长的自然环境。环境的异常使拉金感觉到其陌生与敌意,引发了他对环境问题以及人类未来生活的忧虑,从而深刻影响了他的诗歌思想。气象资料证明,拉金在诗作中敏锐地观察到了人类纪的主要问题,是建立在客观实际之上的艺术审美。
Aesceticism is essential for addressing the challenges caused by the Anthropocene. Poetry, as a literary genre, is an expression of the challenges posed in the Anthropocene. Specifically, it makes observation on significant human impact on the Earth’s geology and ecosystems. In “To the Sea,” Larkin demonstrates his awareness of climate change and his anxiety over the menace to tradition and human existence. The poem, together with his other works, describes the natural environment of England in the late 1960s characterized with the haze, the record-breaking high temperature and the abnormally thriving plants. Larkin’s description of the climate change creates the sense of alienation and hostility which is linked with his pessimism over humanity and existence, and has a far-fetched impact on his poetic ideology. Larkin’s works like “To the Sea” are true and acute observations of realities in the Anthropocene, hence aesthetics grounded on truths.

The Ethical Environment and Ethical Structure of the American Anti-Family Elegy
“二战”后,美国社会极力强调家庭的重要地位,认为美国家庭已步入“黄 金时期”。与此同时,美国家庭挽歌中出现明显的反叛家庭倾向,与社会宣扬的主流家庭伦理秩序背道而驰,具体表现为拒绝继承、反抗权威,打破了生者与死者之间的传统伦理关系。两种倾向构建了当时美国复杂的伦理环境。对于诗人而言,反家庭挽歌反叛的是家庭伦理象征的现代主义的继承要求、权威地位和由此形成的简单伦理结构,是摆脱传统的影响、探寻独特的个人身份和诗人声音的重要手段。但反叛并非割裂,反家庭挽歌的决绝态度和暴力表达是检验与传统之间情感纽带的极端举措,是通过建构复杂伦理结构来疗救时代弊病、追求自由和超越的一种努力。
After the Second World War, American society laid great emphasis on the significance of family, claiming the “Golden Age” of American families had arrived. Conversely, American family elegies demonstrated a tendency of conspicuous hostility against the traditional norms of family, most evident in their refusal of inheritance and denial of authority. This act, however, poses a threat to the traditional ethical relations between the living and the dead. For poets, the desire to disrupt the mainstream ethical structure of American family reflects their quest for distinct personal identities and unique voices of poetry. Hostility, nonetheless, does not necessarily suggests a breach from tradition. As an extreme measure to break from family tradition, the denial of inheritance is an effort to cure social ills and to seek freedom and transcendence.

历史真实与文学虚构——《犹滴传》的叙事结构与意义
Historical Authenticity and Literary Fiction: the Narrative Rhetoric and Its Significance in Judith
希伯来《次经》中的《犹滴传》在犹太民族“第二圣殿时期”产生的诸多 作品中具有独特而重要的价值,文本叙述中的人物、地域及事件孤立起来看显示着历史的真实性,但以希伯来民族史相对照,由这些元素所构成的文本的历史时空却并不真实。作者拣选历史元素精心构造出的叙述背景并非出自历史认知方面的谬误,亦非刻意告知读者《犹滴传》只是虚构而成的普通故事。结合作品著述时犹太民族面对的希腊化时代语境,就可看出作者乃是将历史元素有意错置重构,给读者搭建一座文学叙述意义上的“真实”历史舞台,隐喻当下发生之事。对《犹滴传》叙述特质的分析,不但有助于我们解读“第二圣殿时期”希伯来文学在希腊化时代背景下的独特意义,也为我们认识从希伯来文化到基督教文化传统的嬗变提供了某种启发。
As a book compiled in the Hebrew Apocrypha, Judith stands out with its unique significance among the miscellaneous Hebrew works during the Second Temple Period. From the perspective of isolated reading, historical authenticity is unwaveringly implied by means of the narration of the characters, scenes and events in the text; yet when closely examined under the context of the Hebrew history, the historical settings established by those narrative factors cease to claim such historical credibility. By wittingly framing narration settings with the historical factors, the author of Judith does not intend to indicate his historical fallacies, nor does he purposefully remind the readers of the fictitious nature of Judith. Under the Hellenistic context of the completion of Judith, it can be concluded that the historical factors are intentionally displaced and reorganized by the author, in order to stage a “literarily-authentic” history setting to present a metaphorical narration of the contemporary. Such a narrative analysis will hopefully deepen the interpretation of the unique significance of Hebrew literature in the Second Temple Period under the context of Hellenistic era.

The Notion of Wisdom in The Bible
《圣经》对智慧做过各种描述和界说,探讨了智慧的起源、属性、定义、分类、途径、功能、价值等问题。通过比较可以发现,两约智慧观发生了以下嬗变:两约都认为智慧存在于太初,但关于太初智慧的描述不同,经逻各斯的转换,《新约》对太初智慧的指认发生了变化;两约都认为智慧属于上帝之灵,人的智慧是上帝所赐,但《旧约》还肯定了人的后天努力和民间世俗智慧,而《新约》只强调上帝智慧;两约中智慧的内涵有不同,分类、分级也有不同;两约都认为智慧为首,是无价之宝,贵为生命, 但《旧约》多肯定智慧的现世价值,而《新约》多肯定智慧的来世价值。
In The Bible there is no coherent description and definition of wisdom, although many issues concerned are covered, such as its origin, nature, definition, categorization, function and value. By contrast and comparison between the Old Testament and the New Testament, the paper makes the following observations. The Old Testament and the New Testament share the same view that wisdom comes into being in the beginning, however, the descriptions are quite different in that the identification with wisdom in the beginning changes in the New Testament. They both hold that human wisdom is gifted by god. While in the Old Testament human learning and the worldly wisdom are emphasized, in the New Testament the wisdom of god is predominant. The value of wisdoms differs. In the Old Testament the secularvalue of wisdom is affirmed, while in the New Testament the afterlife value matters. In addition, the connotation and the categorization of wisdom are presented differently in the Old Testament and the New Testament.

论《海边的卡夫卡》中的拟似性伦理犯罪
Simulated Ethical Crime in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore
在《海边的卡夫卡》中,日本作家村上春树采用了与古希腊悲剧《俄狄浦斯王》互文的写作策略,却不局限于传统的伦理犯罪题材,而是借助平行叙事结构和 大量隐喻塑造了一个实施拟似性伦理犯罪的人物形象。所谓拟似性伦理犯罪,即未在现实世界中真正触犯伦理禁忌,而是将内心中想要触犯伦理禁忌的愿望以拟似性方式实施的伦理犯罪,采取的方式不是现实的、直接的、有针对性的,而是非现实的、变相的、替代性的。本文运用文学伦理学批评关于本能、自由意志、理性意志的理论对小说中的拟似性伦理犯罪进行了分析,并认为本能是导致拟似性伦理犯罪的根本动力来源,而理性的不成熟是造成自由意志脱离理性意志控制并通过变相方式自由释放的根本原因。所以,拟似性伦理犯罪属非理性范畴,它不仅无法给施行主体带来真正救赎,反而可能导致实际性伦理犯罪的发生。
In Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami strategically achieves intertextuality with ancient Greek tragedy Oedipus the King, and, furthermore, replaces the traditional theme of ethical crime with a discussion of simulated ethical crime by means of parallel narrative and diverse metaphors. The phrase “simulated ethical crime” refers to the actualization of the intention of violating ethical taboo in some simulated way. Different from the violation of ethical taboo in reality which is real, direct, or targeted, it is fictional, indirect and substitutive. This paper, borrowing the terms of “free will” and “rational will” from Ethical Literary Criticism, examines the cause of the simulated ethical crime of Kafka Tamura, the protagonist. Kafka Tamura’s simulated ethical crime is motivated by his instinct, in which his rational will is taken over by free will. This paper reveals the potential danger of simulated ethical crime. As a result of irrational will, it might lead to actual ethical crime.

From the Concept of Freedom to Criticism of the USA: On Susan Sontag’s “American Spirits”
本文以苏珊·桑塔格的短篇小说集《心问》为参照,聚焦于学术界极少关注的《美国魂》,分析了女主人公追寻自由以及美国伟人的灵魂在她的追寻过程中所扮演的角色。本文认为,小说女主人公所追求的自由是对自由的误读,这种误读正是由含混而矛盾的美国精神导致,小说由此对美国核心价值提出质疑和批评,也反映了桑塔格对美国的基本观点。《美国魂》无论是主题还是艺术形式都成为桑塔格文化思想的重要表达,在桑塔格的文学创作和思想发展中具有重要地位。
This paper, with a focus on Susan Sontag’s short stories, analyzes the woman protagonist’s pursuit and misunderstanding of freedom. It argues that her misunderstanding of freedom is due to the confusing and contradictory summons from the spirits of the great Americans. As such, the paper reveals Sontag’s criticism against the core value of the United States of America. This paper holds that the short story “American Spirit” is an important expression of Sontag’s notion of culture, evident in its theme and artistic form.

The Trickster Narrative in Four Souls
本文从新历史主义的视角,分析厄德里克在《四个灵魂》中的叙述方式和意义,并从叙述的历史性指涉和解构性文本两个角度展示作品中的反抗性叙述。通过对核心叙述者恶作剧者的分析,本文认为恶作剧者不仅是作品中的反抗性人物,而且以其解构特质融入到文本的叙述层面,对历史性进行重构,构建了具有本土族裔特色的恶作剧者话语。它具有鲜明的新历史主义特征,一方面通过结构层面的多元叙述视角抵制白人主流同质化的叙述权威;另一方面通过语言内部的自我消解来揭示语言的内在肌理及其与历史的互动关系,并最终实现对历史本质的真实还原。厄德里克也如恶作剧者一般,解构的同时也在建构,以流动的文本性来尝试创建具有本土传统特色的文本和历史的关联。
In light of the approach of New Historicism, this essay examines the strategy of counter-narrative and its functions of historical reference and of deconstructive textuality in Four Souls by Louise Erdrich. Through analyzing the core narrator of trickster, the essay argues that the trickster not only serves as a character in the novel, but also participates in the narrative to reconstruct history and furthermore, helps build up a trickster narrative of native tribalism. The trickster narrative is featured with the strong interests of New Historicism. The multi-perceptivity within the narrative structure, on the one hand, resists the essentialism of the narrative dominated by the white. On the other hand, it reveals the inner mechanism of the language and its function in constructing history. Louise Erdrich, like the trickster, in the spirit of deconstruction, redefines the connection between text and history in Native American tradition.

The Alienation in Michel Tournier’s Works
米歇尔 • 图尔尼埃作品中出现了大量奇幻的情节描写:主人公自认幻化成自然界的万物,亦或某个神话人物。我们将这一类人物变形称之为人物异化。图尔尼埃的人物异化在其作品中具有普遍性的特点,同时又带有极强的作家个人写作特色。其人物异化强调主观意识的转变。自我的意识一则以空间为坐标,探索自我与周遭事物间的联系;其二则以时间为坐标,追溯历史,在历史的人物中寻找他化的身份。空间与时间两大坐标最终组成了立体的结构,构成了全面性的人物异化写作。图尔尼埃人物异化的实质是一种超验的体会。小说人物在异化的经历中感受到自我存在以外的体验——突破人生存的局限,寻求存在的多样性。
There are many descriptions of transformations in the works of Michel Tournier. i.e. the protagonist is transformed into a living being in nature or a mythological figure. In the context of this writing, this kind of transformation is perceived as alienation, as the process of transformation is often accompanied with the change of subjective consciousness. Self-consciousness as a spatial coordinate reflects the relationship between self and the surrounding things. As a temporal coordinate, it indicates the difference between self and the transformed figures of mythology. In this sense, the transformed characters are in constant state of alienation both in physical sense and in transcendent sense. The essay concludes that the experience of alienation enables the characters to transcend the limit of human existence and understand the diversity of existence.

Acceptance of Dushechka and Tolstoy’s Interpretation in China
《宝贝儿》及托尔斯泰赋意在中国的接受,由作为新文化运动激进思潮之组成部分的妇女解放主题开启,在作为鼓动全民抗战之组成部分的妇女解放问题探讨中延续,并在需要大量劳动力投入经济建设而鼓励女性成为社会化主体的背景下,借助社会主义现实主义理念得以拓展。虽然在激进文化思潮消退,战时动员稍息的 1940 年晚期的国统区曾有过回归文学的接受视野,但托尔斯泰赋意却是一路遭遇批判,待到托尔斯泰赋意获得认同的时候,作为劳动力参与提升 GDP 速度的妇女解放红利已然远去。不过,这时候仍有女性主义将批判锋芒甚至指向《宝贝儿》及其作者的男性价值导向。
Dushechka and Leo Tolstoy’s interpretation were introduced into China, as part of women’s liberation movement, in accordance with the radical ideology of New Culture Movement. The discussion of Tolstoy’s interpretation was then contextualized in the study of women’s liberation in the nationwide anti-Japanese war. The implications of Tolstoy’s interpretation in China were then expanded, together with the idea of socialist realism, in response to the social reality that women were encouraged to be the major labor force ineconomic development. Although in the late 1940s there was a literary trend emphasizing on the aesthetic function of literature in Kuomintang-controlled areas, Tolstoy’s interpretation was criticized. When Tolstoy’s interpretation was eventually recognized, criticism was directed towards Dushechka and the author’s partriarchal perspective.

The Interplay of Artistic Form, Political Pursuit and Ethical Value: A Review of A Study of Lawrence Durrell

Xu Bin’s monograph A Study of Lawrence Durrell establishes a critical paradigm of literary ethical criticism in his research on Durrell’s life and works. The paradigm offers an observation of the interplay of artistic forms, political pursuits and ethical value in Durrell’s works. Moreover, it reveals the influence of environment on the author’s ethical identity. The monograph provides a panoramic survey of Durrell’s travel writing and an interpretation of the political significance of his works.

Ethical Literary Criticism towards Interdisciplinary Studies and Construction of World Literature: A Review of the 8th International Symposium on Ethical Literary Criticism
经过十五年的积累与发展,文学伦理学批评理论框架逐渐成熟与深化,聂珍钊教授领导的研究团队以多种方式推动中国学术话语的海外传播。在“第八届文学伦理学批评国际学术研讨会”上,与会学者围绕着文学伦理学批评的基本术语、显著特质、理论建设和批评实践,国别文学当前的研究热点,以及比较文学与世界文学的研究前沿等议题展开热烈讨论。会议突显出鲜明的跨国界、跨语言、跨学科、跨文类特征,深化拓展了文学伦理学批评理论,推动了世界文学的新建构与新发展,开创了新时期世界文学研究的新格局。
During the past 15 years, the theoretical framework of Ethical Literary Criticism has gradually matured. The research team led by Professor Nie Zhenzhao has made its every effort to promote Chinese academic discourse going abroad. At the 8th International Symposium on Ethical Literary Criticism, all the scholars and participants conducted heated discussions concerning the core concepts, salient features, theoretical construction and criticism practice of EFL, hot issues on national literatures, as well as the research frontiers on comparative literature and world literature. Featured as trans-national, trans-language, cross-disciplinary and trans-genre, the conference helps the development of EFL and promotes the study of world literature in the new era.
